Reconnection

Our family recently returned from a few weeks in America. The trip had many purposes including reconnection with family and with my family heritage. To that end, we drove across Texas to the remote area of Big Bend National Park, where so many of our favourite family heritage stories originate. The boys had been there before, as small children, but this time they were building memories of their own.

It was such a treat to see them 'get it' as we hiked the mountain trails, wandered down the river banks, identified (or tried to) animal tracks, spotted wildlife, watched the sun rise and set. When they read and hear the stories now they will carry into them their own experiences of the sights, smells and sounds of the place. Even so, capturing it on camera, and then documenting is essential for recall. Of course my favourite way to document is in Storybook form.

Life has taken off at lightning speed since our return, and already we have forgotten the slower, more observant and peaceful state that we could indulge in for these few days in the wilderness. At least when we look back on these pages we can recapture and reconnect with them.
